As one of the area’s most famous potteries the Wedgwood Visitor Centre is an obvious place to go and one that won’t disappoint. Here you can enjoy a factory tour to see the pottery being made and take in various pottery displays, before relaxing in the café or enjoying the extensive grounds.
Spode is another popular name and at the Spode Visitor Centre there’s the chance to pick up excellent value for money seconds and clearance items. They, like Wedgwood, also run factory tours and enjoy a licensed restaurant.
Staying on the pottery theme it’s interesting to take a look at the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery whilst you’re in the area. The museum is home to a fine collection of local ceramics and traces back the history of the area’s most profitable industry.
When you’ve toured the potteries for long enough you’ll probably be in the mood for a little retail therapy of another kind. However, the local shopping centre is also known as, yes you guessed it, The Potteries. There you’ll find all the familiar high street brands from Warehouse to Wallis, and Debenhams to Dorothy Perkins.
For a day out with a difference why not venture out to the National Trust owned Biddulph Grange Garden. You’ll discover gloriously landscaped gardens with rare and exotic plants. There are also themed gardens such as the Egyptian Court with its two sphinxes, or the Chinese garden complete with golden buffalo.
